We ain’t ‘fraid of no ghost, but we are scared of flood damage, contaminated drinking water, and environmental health problems. We rounded up a few resources to answer the age-old question: Who you gonna call?

👻 If there’s something strange...

Drinking water problems
If your tap water has a strange look or smell, call the city’s Water Utility Department at 608-266-4641, or the 24-hour line at 608-266-4665.

Animal collection
Submit a request online, or call 608-266-4430 to have the city pick up a dead animal on your property. Otherwise, you’re permitted to place small deceased animals in your garbage can.

👀 ...in your neighborhood

Barking dogs
Is there a barking dog keeping you up at night? Instead of venturing into the dark neighborhood searching for Fido, call the non-emergency line at 608-266-4275.

Contact your Alder
Learn more about the Common Council, city government, and how you can get involved by reaching out to your district’s Alderperson.

Boat noise
While East Washington Avenue residents are serenaded by revving engines, those who live lakeside experience a different type of traffic noise. Boats can’t operate at a noise level that exceeds 86 decibels, call the DNR Tip Line at 1-800-847-9367 to report excessive noise.

🦠 If there’s something weird...

Environmental health problems
If you notice something weird while out and about, Public Health Madison and Dane County wants to hear about it.

Think:
  • Public pools
  • Restaurants
  • Tattoo parlors
  • Septic systems
  • Lodging conditions
  • Mold
  • Air quality
  • Pests
  • Unsanitary living conditions

🏚️ ....and it don’t look good

Tree damage
If a tree falls...
  • Onto the sidewalk or street | Forestry Department | 608-266-4816 or 608 255-2345 (after hours)
  • Onto a power line | MG&E | 608-252-7111
Flood damage
Call the Engineering Department at 608-266-4430 if clogged grates or waterways are causing an imminent threat to your property.

Exterior housing
Note: If the violation can’t be seen from the sidewalk, the city may ask permission to enter your property.

News Notes
Drink
  • Whether you want it sour or sweet, Wisconsinites like a good brandy old fashioned. So much so, there is a newly proposed resolution to formally make it the state’s cocktail. The Badger State accounts for more than half of Korbel’s annual brandy sales in the US. (WISN)
Tech
  • You might want to change your password if your password is “password.” A recent cybersecurity study found that Wisconsin ranked last in password security nationally. 39.1% of Americans have a password length of 12+ characters, with only 23.3% of Wisconsinites meeting that recommended amount. (WKOW)
Health
  • One in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. The Wisconsin Well Woman Program provides free breast cancer screenings for women with limited and little or no insurance. (City of Madison)
Civic
  • In December of 1963, a historic City of Madison Equal Opportunities Ordinance was signed. To celebrate the community’s civil rights efforts, a 60th anniversary celebration will be held Nov. 11 at The Atrium at Park Street. (City of Madison)
Development
  • Downtown’s St. John’s Lutheran Church, active in the city for 167 years, will be demolishing its building on East Washington to expand its ministry. They plan on building a $46.6 million, 10-story redevelopment with a new sanctuary, community spaces, offices, and low-cost apartments. (Wisconsin State Journal)

  • UW-Madison has designed a new game app for farmers. “Mooving Cows” aims to help dairy farmers better understand and learn more about how to interact safely with their bovines. (Wisconsin State Journal)

Safety first

Make sure your Halloween is full of treats, not tricks.
  • Drive slow, the streets will be filled with little ones hyped up on sugar
  • Incorporate reflective gear or light-up accessories into your kids’ costumes
  • Map out a route ahead of time with kids who are going without a guardian
  • Homemade treats are great, but it’s better to be safe than sorry, stick to prepackaged store-bought goodies

Reese’s cups are far and away my favorite candy. In fact, one of my favorite parts about any holiday is the special Reese’s shapes — anyone with taste knows these are the upper echelon of Halloween (and beyond) candy.
