We know the question on your mind this week, Madisonians — when’s it going to cool off ?
Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect in our city for September, October, and November. While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for what fall will bring. Reminder: The first official day of fall is just one month away on Saturday, Sept. 23.

Temperature and Precipitation
This fall, Madison is predicted to experience typical fall temperatures and precipitation levels for the area. Keep reading to learn more about our typical temps during each fall month.
Drought
In the Midwest, the remainder of August is expected to be drier than normal, with only several-tenths of an inch anticipated. These drought conditions are expected to persist into fall, with a chance of slight improvement.
September
September kicks off fall by bringing more agreeable weather to the city. Temperatures typically range from an average low of 52° to a comfortable average high of 71.1°. This transition into September marks a subtle shift in Madison’s climate, bringing the average high temperature down more than 6° from August’s 77.4°.
77.4°?! Sounds great. We’re all feeling the heat this August, with this week’s high creeping near 100°. Be sure to check on your elderly or unhoused neighbors, and find a nearby cooling center if need be.
October
In October, highs can reach 70°, but the average temperature will often stay in between 42° and 57°. Here’s something to look forward to — October (along with April) is the least humid month of the year in the 608. Fun fact: The city’s first snowfall of the year typically happens during October.
November
November’s weather serves as a reminder that winter is near with its average high temps barely reaching 43°, a 15° drop from October. If an average low temperature of 30° doesn’t make you want to curl up in bed, the end of Daylight Saving Time on Sunday, Nov. 5 sure will.

Part of me decided to run the fall weather outlook today as a form of escapism from the reality of this week’s heat. If you’re looking for a way to cool down, don’t bother turning on the oven and opt for an ice cream crawl for dinner instead.
