Did you know that there are 1,000+ geocaches in the Madison area? “City Editor Ally, what is a geocache?” I’m glad you asked. Let’s find out.
📝 Geocaching 101
Think of geocaching as a worldwide scavenger hunt. Participants use GPS coordinates to find hidden containers — geocaches — in outdoor public spaces.
These physical caches are usually trinkets and/or logbooks in a small container, hidden in plain sight. Pro tip:Leave your shovel at home — geocaches should never be buried.
How to play:
Search “Geocaching” in your phone’s app store. There are multiple apps to choose from, but we recommend this one.
Find a cache near you — the app will use your location to map out geocaches in your area.
Embark on your journey. Once you get close to the point of interest, refer to the hint provided on the app to locate the hidden geocache (they’re often disguised as rocks, bricks, birdhouses, or other “normal” objects).
After you sleuth out the geocache, you may sign the attached physical log sheet and record your progress in-app.

Surviving a zombie apocalypse in Madison, WI

Any “The Last of Us” fans out there? If the HBO hit makes you painfully aware of how unprepared you are for a zombie apocalypse, this one’s for you.
Here are some local ways you can improve your zombie survival skills:
Archery is a great skill to have in an apocalyptic scenario, so check out Little Jon’s in Marshall to get started.
For those up-close encounters, take Muay Thai classes at Twisted Fitness.
I’ve never seen a zombie climb a tree. Try a high ropes course through UW-Madison’s Adventure Learning Program to get a feel for what arboreal navigation could look like in the face of the undead.
You’ll inevitably get some boo-boos during the end of the world. Patch yourself up thanks to first aid lessons from the Red Cross.
I’ve come to accept the fact that if a zombie apocalypse ever occurred, I’m pretty much toast. My survival skills start and end in middle school with a couple of outdoorsy Girl Scouts badges. Speaking of, it’s cookie season, so I’ll be stocking up on Thin Mints and PB Patties.
