News Notes

Education

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has given the Madison Metropolitan School District a 3 out of 5 star rating, stating the district “meets expectations” as a whole. The score was given based on English + math test scores, attendance rates, and chronic absenteeism. (WKOW)

Older Adults

What could be Wisconsin’s first planned intergenerational neighborhood is slated to break ground next year. The 19-unit community — part of nonprofit Hope & A Future — would include 15 independent living condos for folks 55 and up, four rental spaces for younger residents, a preschool, and an adult daycare. (The Cap Times)

Weather

Madison is using a new type of road salt this year to keep streets safe during the winter. The Streets Division will now use magnesium chloride in extreme snow events, instead of the regular salt + sand. However, magnesium chloride can be destructive to infrastructure, so it will only be used in extreme circumstances. (WMTV)

Transit

Paratransit company Quality Transit LLC is back on the streets after closing Tuesday following a vandalism attack that left eight of its vehicles with slashed tires. The incident impacted 97 rides on Wednesday. (WKOW)

Cause

The Madison Reading Project is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a book drive + fundraiser. The org’s goal is to raise $110,000 and 15,000 books for local kiddos. Madisonians can donate online.

Wellness

The Wrap

From our Editor

Alina_wrap_blue
If you were curious about how magnesium chloride works, it sucks moisture straight from the ice itself, thereby speeding up the process of creating a brine (which has a lower freezing point than just water).
