Juneteenth — on Wednesday, June 19 — commemorates the day the abolition of slavery was enforced in the US, nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

McFarland Juneteenth Celebration | Sunday, June 16 | 11 a.m.-3 p.m. | Arnold Larson Park, 6002 Exchange St., McFarland | Free | Donations will go toward the McFarland High School’s Black Student Union at this celebration featuring educational speakers, family activities, and food.

Lieutenant Marcia Gates (1915-1970) is the first woman honored at the Hall of Heroes in Madison’s VA hospital. The Wisconsinite was a WWII nurse, Bronze Star recipient, and spent over 30 months as a POW.
