The legendary trumpet player played in Madison on a couple of occasions, making him one of the many jazz legends, and legends yet-to-be, to play on stages all around the 608.
Cafe CODA, 1224 Williamson St. One of the premiere locations in Dane County for jazz, the cafe’s calendar is always full. Owner Hanah Jon Taylor is an internationally known saxophonist and flutist.
Cider Farm, 8216 Watts Rd. The cidery frequently has live jazz playing in its tasting room on Sundays.
Hamel Music Center, 740 University Ave. UW-Madison’s Mead Witter School of Music has a wide variety of jazz ensembles that regularly perform, often for free, at the Hamel Music Center.
Lola’s Hi/Lo Lounge, 617 N. Sherman Ave. The vinyl bar’s DJs play jazz regularly, spinning classics from the likes of Herbie Hancock and Billie Holiday.
North Street Cabaret, 610 North St. Dedicated to roots music, the venue presents a wide variety of musical traditions.
Overture Center for the Arts, 201 State St. Jazz greats grace the Overture stage regularly. Delfeayo Marsalis (of the iconic Marsalis family of jazz musicians) played with his Uptown Jazz Orchestra not long ago.
Festivals
Madison Jazz Festival, June, various locations Last year’s event included The Bad Plus, Miguel Zenon, and Ranky Tanky, among others. The performers for this year’s festival have yet to be announced.
La Fête De Marquette, Thursday, July 11-Sunday, July 14, McPike Park The French-themed festival brings a lot of NOLA to the 608, including jazz, zydeco, and more. This year’s headliners include the Low Down Brass Band and Cimafunk.
Jazz at Five, Wednesday, Aug. 7-Wednesday, Sept. 4, Corner of State Street and Capitol Square Celebrating 31 years in 2024, the festival will bring jazz at the top of State Street every Wednesday night.

You better be-leaf that new trees are being planted throughout Madison. The city’s Urban Forestry division began planting 1,374 trees from 27 different species this week. The spring planting work is expected to continue through the end of the month to ensure a diverse, thriving canopy in the city.
Outdoors
There will be plenty more play opportunities at Penn Park soon. The community is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the park’s newly constructed basketball and futsal courts on Thursday, April 11 from 4 to 4:30 p.m.

Gamma Ray, a new independent music venue and bar, will open on Saturday, June 1. Owned by Kevin Willmott II, the inclusive space is located at 121 W. Main St. The kickoff show will include Dearly Brearly, Cowboy Winter, and Jimmy Sugarcane. (Tone Madison)

A 5,000-sqft gaming lounge is coming to State Street. The Guild, catering to gamers of all skill levels, will open this summer (date TBD) at 668 State St. Owned by two former UW-Madison students, the space will feature ~40 gaming computers and popular console stations. (Wisconsin State Journal)

Here’s the scoop, a new ice cream shop is opening in Waunakee. Lundy’s Ice Cream, in partnership with Madison’s beloved Chocolate Shoppe, will have its grand opening on Friday, April 26 at 305 E. Main St. (In Business)

William Walsh, a Madison-based fisherman, won the top “Project Pitch It” prize for Harpoon Lures, his patented fishing technology. You can watch himlure in local business moguls on the Wisconsin entrepreneurship show similar to “Shark Tank.”

Moxy Madison Downtown, a Marriott-owned boutique hotel, is around the corner from the Sylvee and a stone’s throw away from Breese Stevens Field.
