Game on. Madison Softball is going to take the field for the first time ever at Warner Park this summer.
Established just a few months ago by the Madison Mallards, the team is part of the new Northwoods League Softball summer collegiate league. It will showcase the best female collegiate softball players from across the country.
“This is a fantastic way to grow the game,” said Raquel Savoy, the team’s new manager. “Madison’s community is the perfect place to open the first year the Northwoods League has softball.”
The 42-game season, 21 of which will be played at Warner Park, runs Saturday, June 15-Wednesday, Aug. 7. The games will be seven innings in length.
The team’s roster will have sixteen players. The team is currently seeking host families. Those that host a player for the summer get season tickets, discounts on merchandise, free food, and more.
Savoy will be joined in the dugout by Laurèn Schiek, the team’s assistant coach. An Oshkosh native, she said, “I am looking forward to the opportunity to help inspire the next generation of female athletes to work hard and dream big.”
The athletes don’t have a team name yet. Currently, it’s Madison Softball, but not for much longer. They recently had a community-wide contest to name the team. The finalists: Lake Muensters, Night Mares, Swamp Angels, and Thunder Chickens.
The public is invited to the team name unveiling on Saturday, April 20 at the Orpheum Theater. Doors open at 5 p.m. with the unveiling at 5:30 p.m. The event will include games, free food, merchandise, and more. You can RSVP to attend.
Savoy, who has coached at Chabot College, Santa Clara University, and UC-Berkeley, said, “I am looking forward to the summer environment with some great softball.”

The former location of the Boston Store at the East Towne Mall is now up for sale. | Photo by 608today
Much of the East Towne Mall is vacant storefronts and empty parking lots. But, perhaps, for not much longer. The space may be transformed into mixed-use housing.
Past
It hasn’t always been empty. Sears, Menards, Gander Mountain, and Boston Store once occupied the shopping center.
Present
But times are changing. The city has rezoned the property to allow for mixed-use developments. Now, the site is for sale with hopes that the next owner can bring housing to the area. The 15-acre parcel could host more than 1,000 apartments.
Future
The property is part of the city’s Northeast Area Plan. Interested parties can subscribe to an email list to keep tabs on the plan’s progress. Additionally, public meetings (dates TBD) will be held soon for citizens to offer input on the drafted plan.

Most everyone, rightly so, likes Ha Long Bay and its tasty Asian dishes. For my money though, I like heading over to Fair Oaks Avenue to soak in the ambiance at Sala Thai while I eat most everything off their menu.
