Madisonians can cheer, “Go team,” at teeming local sports bars

And so it begins.
The Badgers men’s basketball team is going to the big dance — the NCAA tournament. The Badgers’ first game is against James Madison, taking place on Friday, March 22, with a 8:40 p.m. tip-off.
Wisconsin basketball isn’t the only sport making its mark on the national scene. The Badgers women’s hockey team is competing, again, in the Frozen Four. The team is two wins away from another national championship and next play Colgate on Friday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m.
The men’s hockey team is also going to the NCAA playoffs, though they won’t know details until the brackets are announced on Sunday, March 24.
Meanwhile, Madison Forward FC’s new soccer season is upon us. The team’s first home game is tonight at Breese Stevens Field against Duluth FC.
With all of these sports to watch, where can one go to enjoy them with others? You don’t have to look far to find a good Madison sports bar. Here are some of our favorites.

Located inside Bowl-A-Vard Lanes, you can watch sports after playing a sport out on the alleys.

The bar has been around for over 40 years and serves things like sloppy Joes and goulash.

The sprawling sports bar has pool tables, dart boards, and, occasionally, arm wrestling tournaments.

The neighborhood bar has been around since 1990, serving fun burgers of the week with cozy game time viewing.

Three Madison nonprofits recently received grants to improve local food access in schools by building relationships between farmers and school administrators. This event is for the birds, literally. Registration is open for the Great Wisconsin Birdathon, taking place Monday, April 15 through Saturday, June 15. Birders of all skill levels can join teams to log bird sightings to raise support and awareness for local bird conservation.
Cause
You can feel wheel good if you Cycle for Sight. Donate to or host an event for the fitness fundraiser, which is taking place now through April and goes toward vision research. Last year, the event raised $64,000 for the McPherson Eye Research Institute. Register now.

Madisonians may be in a state of bliss after learning Wisconsin ranks No. 10 amongst Top States for Singles. Compiled by Consumer Affairs, the results are based, in part, on age demographics, median income, and cost of living.
Legacy
Former Edgewood College President Mary Ellen Gevelinger died last week at the age of 80. She took the president role in 2019, navigating the school through the beginnings of the pandemic.
Arts
Paula Panczenko will retire from Tandem Press this summer. The fine art press is affiliated with UW-Madison’s School of Education’s Art Department. Located at 1743 Commercial Ave., the press made the school one of the highest-rated print programs in the US during her tenure.
Plan Ahead
Grand Poetry Slam Champion Andre Bradford will headline the Capital Verses Slam Poetry Festival taking place at Madison College’s Goodman South Campus. The Austin-based poet will perform on Thursday, April 11 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event is free.
