News Notes

Outdoors
  • Madison is full of biking opportunities. Thanks to the Dane County Parks Commission, there is now one more. The commission greenlit final funding to complete a new two-mile recreational trail in the Capitol Springs Recreational Area. The trail is expected to open before fall. (WKOW)
Open
  • Vintage Spirits and Grill will remain open. Located at 529 University Ave., the beloved restaurant was threatened with demolition for a new housing development, but developers canceled plans for the project.
Drink
  • Karben4 Brewing, on Madison’s East side, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week, but the business will continue operations as usual. “We plan to forge ahead and come out of this phase stronger than ever,” owner Zak Koga said in a statement. (Channel 3000)
Environment
  • Well, that didn’t take long. The Wisconsin State Climatology office declared lakes Mendota and Monona open this week. With the mild winter, both lakes were frozen for 44 days, making the shortest period of ice cover on record for Lake Monona. (WKOW)
Biz
  • The University Book Store is celebrating its 130th anniversary with sales and promotions throughout 2024. Founded in 1894 (originally called the University Co-op), the store now sells everything from textbooks to Badger poop mints.
Sports
  • Two Madison-area bowling alleys will continue to roll along despite being sold to Triple Shift Entertainment. Madison’s Bowl-A-Vard Lanes and Sun Prairie’s Prairie Lanes were acquired by the Minnesota-based chain. “We’re not here to bring change,” said Triple Shift CEO Robby Spigner in a statement. (Wisconsin State Journal)
