In its largest conservation acquisition in county history, Dane County has purchased 625 acres of property in the towns of Verona and Montrose for the Sugar River Wildlife Area. The space consists mostly of cropland and will be converted into prairie, while also providing restoration opportunities for various habitats. (Madison Commons)
Traffic
With holiday traffic ramping up, and holiday parties beckoning, local law enforcement has started its “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which goes through New Year’s Day. According to the Sun Prairie Police Department, there were over 6,000 alcohol-related crashes that killed 155 people last year in Wisconsin. (WKOW)
History
A home near the southeastern shore of Lake Monona has joined the State Register of Historic Places. The Willard and Fern Tompkins House, built in 1937 by the architectural firm of Beatty & Strang, is one of the first Madison-area houses in the modern International Style. (Wisconsin State Journal)

A Cottage Grove family is warning others this holiday season of an online dog scam. They lost over $1,100 to get a beagle from Nebraska that didn’t exist. Often, scammers will adamantly refuse to do anything over the phone, asking for payment via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or cash transfer. (Channel 3000)

Gov. Tony Evers recently appointed Nadiyah Johnson, founder and CEO of Milky Way Tech Hub, to a task force on workforce and artificial intelligence (AI). Due to family health issues, Alder Kristen Slack of Madison’s District 19 has resigned from the Common Council, effective January 10.
Now, eligible residents of District 19 are encouraged to submit applications to fill the vacant position until the term concludes on April 15, 2025.
