UW-Madison is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year, and part of that celebration includes the commission of some new decor for Bascom Hall.

During the month of November, three large banners are adorning the face of Bascom Hall to celebrate the Ho-Chunk Nation.

The triptych piece of art titled “Seed by Seed” draws inspiration from traditional bandolier patterns, basketry, and the use of natural fibers.

Here’s what some of the banner’s elements represent:

  • Two water spirits are depicted on the center banner, touching tails. Fun fact: There is a double-tailed water spirit effigy mound right around the corner on Observatory Hill
  • Above each water spirit are abstract Ws, a nod to UW-Madison
  • The green rings on the outer banners represent Madison’s four lakes — Mendota, Monona, Waubesa, and Kegonsa
  • Patches within those green rings symbolize the different colors that reflect on the lakes throughout the day
  • Across the bottom of the entire piece are symbols of the 12 Ho-Chunk clans — Thunder, Warrior, Eagle, Pigeon, Bear, Buffalo, Deer, Wolf, Elk, Fish, Water Spirit, and Snake
While the banners will come down at the end of the month, they will return in the spring as part of Bascom Hall’s regular banner rotation.

🎃 Hit the road jack(-o'-lantern)

Here’s what to do with your decaying fall pumpkins

Pumpkins on a porch
Until next year, pumpkins. | Photo by 608today
Now that Halloween is over, you might have a slightly soggy jack-o'-lantern sitting on your porch. According to Sustain Dane, roughly 100 tons of pumpkins are discarded during fall in Madison. We’ve rounded up a few ways you can get rid of yours responsibly.

Feeders | If the squirrels haven’t already started making a snack-o'-lantern of your jack-o’lantern, it’s only a matter of time. Expedite the process by cutting up your pumpkins and adding chunks to your squirrel + bird feeders.

Local gardens | Browse Madison-area community gardens to find one in your neighborhood that may be interested in adding your old pumpkins to their compost pile.

Kick ‘em to the curb | Check when your neighborhood’s next leaf collection date is, and toss your pumpkins in your leaf pile to be collected by the city.

Kick-start your composting journey by checking out some local composting opportunities:

From the editor
I’m not a huge Halloween fan/decorator, so I never have to worry about getting rid of any biodegradable decor. Thanksgiving and Christmas are more my speed, and I have my eye on Turnkey’s corn pudding pie for this year’s festivities.
