Maria Schirmer Devitt is The Bubbler’s newest Artist-in-Residence this fall and winter season. Keep reading to learn more about The Bubbler and Devitt’s “Wishing Well/Well Wishes” residency.

🫧 The Bubbler

Madison Public Library launched The Bubbler a decade ago to create an artistic hub for local artists and residents alike.

Artists are contracted by Madison Public Library to facilitate free workshops, community events, and exhibitions at all nine of the library’s branches.

Past projects:
  • Utility Box Project | Artist Kim Charles Kay led creative workshops to spruce up some otherwise drab utility boxes in the city.
  • Mural Alley | Local teens joined forces with The Bubbler in order to create five murals at the Madison East Shopping Center.
  • Whoopensocker! | A Theatre LILA arts education program for elementary students.

👋 Meet the artist

Devitt will be on the ground floor of the Central Library through the end of the year exploring the ins and outs of what wishes are and how they can come true. Pro tip: Look for the life-sized wishing well.

The Madison artist has worked on a few local projects you may recognize — the shoe slide mural at Vilas Park and “The First Step” mural at the Dane County Juvenile Detention Center.

    Sports
    • The UW-Madison women’s volleyball team keeps netting wins. So many wins, in fact, that they’re setting records. Their 17-0 record is their best start to a season ever and they’ve set a new NCAA record, winning 27 consecutive sets (and counting). Next up? Tonight versus Ohio State. (Daily Cardinal)
    Development
    • Developer Curt Brink is seizing on property near Breese Stevens Field with a proposal to build a 15-story, roughly 265-room dual-use hotel on East Washington Avenue. Great Lakes Management Group will run what will be two Hilton hotels in the building. If approvals are secured, construction will begin in mid-2024. (Wisconsin State Journal)
    Eat
    • Local foodies are drunk with excitement over the news that Ahan, famed for its drunken noodles, will open its new space this Thursday. The popular pan-Asian restaurant, which previously operated inside of The Bur Oak on Winnebago Street, is now at 744 Williamson St. (Channel 3000)
    History
    • The home of a funeral home owner is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The Frank Riley-designed house, located in Monona, was owned by Otto Schroeder before being sold to famed local artist Aaron Bohrod, who lived there until his death in 1992.
    Cause
    • Let’s talk turkey. Goodman Community Center’s Thanksgiving Basket Drive is here. For the past 35 years, the organization has been giving Thanksgiving groceries to families in need. It comes with a frozen turkey, pumpkin pie, potatoes, and all the fixings. Basket registration closes Friday, Oct. 27, and donation drop-off starts mid-November.
    Holiday
    • Santa Claus is coming to town… on the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train. It rolls through Wisconsin Dec. 3-Dec. 5, with glowing lights, holiday decorations, and musicians. It won’t visit Madison, but you can catch it in Portage or Wisconsin Dells. It’ll sleigh. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

    • Swooning over someone while strolling down State Street might just work. According to a recent WalletHub report, based on 36 key indicators of dating friendliness, Madison is the No. 2 best city for singles in the nation. Halloween is less than two weeks away. Now that your plans are set, it’s time to lock in a Madison-themed costume.

    Flamingo
Pink is predicted to be a popular hue this Halloween thanks to the “Barbie” boom. Put a unique spin on it while honoring the official bird of Madison.

    Cat taking a bath
A pair of cat ears and a loofah is all you need to pay homage to local artist Art Paul Schlosser’s popular song, “My Cat Was Taking a Bath.”

    Traffic cone
    Every isthmus resident’s biggest fear.

    Four lakes
Need a last-minute group costume? Dress head to toe in blue, slap a few “Hello, my name is” stickers on your shirts, and write in each lake name.

    Typical Madisonian
Another use for those “Hello, my name is” stickers, take some creative liberty in putting together your own “Typical Madisonian” costume. Perhaps some biking gear with your favorite craft beer in hand.

    From the editor
In last week’s “What’s the best type of Halloween costume?” poll, the majority of respondents voted for funny costumes and I agree wholeheartedly. I think it takes a lot of effort (and money) to make a costume genuinely scary.
