Washing with cold water can drastically decrease energy consumption. In tandem, if you’re running low on detergent, skip the supermarket and try out Green Life Trading Company (1334 Williamson St.) instead. Just bring an empty container to the store to fill up with liquid laundry detergent or try one of the detergent alternatives.

Start stretching, Madison. Registration for the Lake Monona 20k and 5k is now open ahead of the Saturday, May 4 race day. Pro tip: Registration costs $35 during the month of August, and will increase in price as the race nears.

Starting this fall, you’ll be able to enjoy alcoholic beverages at the Kohl Center. Beer, wine, and hard seltzers are being added to the menu, and the venue will follow similar rules as the Wisconsin Union when it comes to alcohol consumption. (WKOW)

Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream won big at the LA International Dairy Competition. The Madison-based sweet treat company brought home a total of 11 medals with Butter Pecan, Zanzibar, and Mint Avalanche all winning gold.

Today through Sunday, August 6 is the nationwide Cat Video Fest. Celebrate the occasion at the Flix Brewhouse located in East Towne Mall. Enjoy an hour-and-a-half compilation of the latest and greatest cat videos, curated from submissions.

This August, NBCUniversal Local is partnering with numerous shelters nationwide for Clear The Shelters, an initiative focused on pet adoption and donations. The campaign aims to match animals in need with caring homes and has successfully placed over 860,000 pets in permanent residences since its inception in 2015.

Each week this month, DCHS will run a special promotion. This week, through Sunday, Aug. 6, cat adoption fees are 50% off.
