City Editor Ryan here. 👋 When it comes to meeting your healthcare needs, it can be dizzying to know where to look for support. That’s why I toured SSM Heath’s South Madison Campus , which opened its new, state-of-the-art building in February — complete with 180,000 sqft of centralized healthcare services and 100+ primary and multi-specialty care providers.
Here’s what I discovered.
What we tried:
📍 First stop: Lobby + community amenities
After learning about the easy, patient check-in process (including lobby self-registration + online pre-registration options) I popped into the public cafe + neighborhood pharmacy, available to both patients and neighborhood residents. Let’s just say anyone visiting will recognize the thought put into a positive visitor experience — including the calming aesthetic of wood elements throughout, much of it repurposed from black walnut trees previously in the clinic’s lot.
📍 Second stop: Orthopedics + therapy services
On the second floor is a comprehensive and thoughtful mix of wellness spaces, including multiple gyms for physical, speech, and occupational therapy services — not to mention X-ray imaging for orthopedics care.
📍Last stop: Fifth floor cancer care
Divided into four unique neighborhoods, the top floor creates an accessible, easy to navigate space for patients to receive infusions + other advanced cancer care services. Plus, each bay has scenic views overlooking Lake Wingra and the UW Arboretum — channeling healing elements from nature.
What not to miss:
The South Madison campus utilizes natural elements and practices to support patient wellness + embody WELL Building Standards .
With features like active solar panels, easy outdoor access, plus input from local landscape architects, it’s hard to miss the natural beauty both inside and outside of the clinic — not to mention the pro-environmental ethic embedded into the experience.
What we’re still talking about:
The South Madison Campus is a public place + an investment in the community. With plans for this campus and clinic to stand for 100+ years, SSM invested heavily in creating a neighborhood oriented space that will serve patients, visitors, and staff. From public transit accessibility to on-site comprehensive care, the clinic is ready to serve the 608’s every need.
How you can experience this:
