Looking back on her-story

For Women’s History Month, we’re taking some time to tip our hats to some of the women who worked hard to make Madison what it is today.

Here are a few names you should know.

Lisa Peyton

In 2012, Lisa founded the Foundation For Black Women’s Wellness. This locally based nonprofit aims to eliminate obstacles — such as health disparities — that Black women face. She has won a myriad of awards for her community involvement and her annual summit, Black Women’s Wellness Day, brings together hundreds of women to support one another in prioritizing health.

Ada Deer

Ada was the first Menominee tribe member to graduate from UW Madison. After receiving an M.S.W. from Columbia, she contributed to the Menominee Restoration Act of 1972, which gave federal recognition to the Menominee Reservation. She was also the first woman to lead the US Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Madison has a lot of incredible sports teams to cheer for — but one deserves a little extra praise today. UW-Madison women’s hockey team has secured the No. 1 seed in this year’s tournament and they’re the selected favorite to snatch the championship title.

To celebrate and send the team off with good luck, let’s talk about the team and UW-Madison’s athletics program.

University of Wisconsin Athletics | Est. 1870

The UW-Madison athletic department has a storied history. They’ve been primarily competing in the Big Ten Conference for all sports since the 1896-97 season. The women’s hockey team (ahem, national champions) competes in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Where they play: LaBahn Arena
    Mascot: Buckingham “Bucky” U. Badger
Team colors: Badger Red and white
      Major accomplishments:
      • No college has won more women’s hockey national titles than the Wisconsin Badgers.

      Remember to stop on red.

That’s what Dane County law enforcement is asking of local drivers as part of a coordinated effort to reduce the number of accidents caused by someone who ran a red light or through a stop sign. Especially at risky intersections like E. Broadway at Monona Drive.

Be careful out there. There’s nothing more important than your life.
