553. That’s the number of affordable housing units that are being built at Huxley Yards near the old Oscar Mayer plant on Roth Street. Ground broke for the project — which is expected to include a new city park — last week.

What

Two buildings are being constructed:
  1. The View will contain 303 units and serve families and individuals. It will offer several amenities, including job training facilities.
  2. The Victoria will provide 250 units for older adults. Amenities will include a club room, a craft room, a fitness center, and two rooftop courtyards.
Both buildings will have Wisconsin Green Built Home certifications with rooftop solar power systems. Details about the as-yet-named park are TBD.

Why

All of the units will be reserved for individuals making up to 50%, 60%, or 70% of Dane County’s Area Median Income (AMI), depending on the unit.

That would equate to a salary range of $44,100-$61,740 for an individual or a total income range of $62,950-$88,130 for a family of four.

How

The City of Madison contributed more than $6 million to the project through Tax Incremental Financing funds. The project was additionally financed through grants and tax credits.

The buildings are scheduled to be move-in ready by fall 2026.

Be safe on local waterways this coming holiday weekend. The Wisconsin DNR and law enforcement agencies are making that suggestion clear during their Operation Dry Water campaign taking place Thursday, July 4-Saturday, July 6.

An increased presence of game wardens and law enforcement will be on the water patrolling and educating boaters about safe boating practices, including sober boating.

Why?

  • Alcohol use is a leading factor in recreational boating fatalities. In Wisconsin, it is illegal to operate a vessel with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or higher.
  • Last year, 85% of those who drowned in a recreational boating incident were not wearing life jackets.

How to stay safe

  • Take a Wisconsin DNR boat safety education course ($10-$50).
  • Always wear a properly fitted and fastened life jacket when on or near the water.
  • Keep an eye on the weather and always tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return.
