Conservation Parks

Cherokee Marsh, 6098 N. Sherman Ave. (North); 5002 School Rd. (South)
Offering a plethora of winding trails through woodland and marsh, the parks are a bird lover’s paradise.

Edna Taylor Conservation Park, 802 Femrite Dr.
With oak savanna and wetlands, the park offers trails to the nearby Aldo Leopold Nature Center.

Pheasant Branch Conservancy, 4864 Pheasant Branch Rd., Middleton
Visitors have opportunities to commune with nature, have a picnic, or bike its many trails.

Sports parks

Garner, 333 S. Rosa Rd.
In 2016, Garner Park became home to Madison’s inaugural exclusive pickleball courts. The 42-acre park features a scenic viewpoint and an award-winning shelter.

Pump Track (Aldo Leopold Park), 2906 Traceway Dr.
Let your momentum carry you as you traverse the curved asphalt at the Leopold Pump Track.

Off-leash dog parks

Sycamore, 4517 Sycamore Ave.
This 20-acre dog park is kitty-corner (no pun intended) to an adventure biking course for dog owners with a taste for adrenaline.

Warner, 2301 Sheridan Dr.
This park is home to a beautiful lagoon, but make sure to check water conditions before letting your pup take a dip.

News Notes
Transit
  • Metro Transit’s new “Bus Tracker,” a real-time GPS tracker of buses around town, is now live for 12 buses. Currently in its test phase, more buses will be added after the testing phase is completed.
Civic
  • The City of Middleton will spray naturally occurring insecticides via helicopter this Friday, May 17 to suppress the spread of spongy moths. Pets should be kept inside during the spraying that starts at 6:00 a.m. It should last about an hour. (Channel 3000)
Environment
  • Recycle your (acceptable) food scraps at the South Madison Farmers’ Market starting Tuesday, May 21 from 2-6 p.m. The 1602 S. Park St. market will collect scraps every Tuesday through Oct. 29.
Sports
  • Lance Randall is the new assistant coach for the Badgers men’s basketball team. He fills the spot left by Dean Oliver who departed after seven seasons. Randall recently served as Saint Leo University’s head coach. (Channel 3000)
Pets
  • Doggone it, it was close. Mercedes, a German shepherd handled by Kent Boyles of Edgerton, placed second (Reserve Best in Show) at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The four-year-old finisher is co-owned by Cynthia Wilhelmy and Sheree Moses.
Community
  • This year’s Dane County Breakfast on the Farm will take place on Saturday, June 8 at Blue Star Dairy Farms in DeForest. For over 45 years, thousands of attendees have enjoyed a large pancake breakfast while learning where the food comes from. Tickets ($5-$10) can be purchased at the farm day of.
Family
  • A family that bounces together stays together. Big Bounce America is coming to Sun Prairie’s Angell Park Speedway, Friday, June 21-Sunday, June 23. The largest touring inflatable event in the world, there are family and adult-only sessions available.
Drink
  • Starkweather Brewing won silver at the New York International Beer Competition for its Jamestown Jackdaw, an Irish dry stout.
Try This
  • Your chance to build a fort and play capture the flag is nearly here. Camp Aldo, an adult summer camp, takes place on Saturday, Aug. 24 at Monona’s Aldo Leopold Nature Center. Attendees to the inaugural event will receive a cup to fill with beverages and a retro-style T-shirt.

A scrum of rugby players will be in Madison this weekend for the High School Girls Rugby National Championships.

Where: Wisconsin Rugby Sports Complex, 448 Clark St., Cottage Grove
When: Friday, May 17-Sunday, May 19
Attend: Daily passes are $7 and a weekend pass is $12 (paid at the gate).

The best teams in the nation will be there, with several Wisconsin schools vying for the title.

I don’t know if I’ve visited ALL of Madison’s parks, but I’m crossing them off my list. And that doesn’t include Dane County’s 25 parks, 20 wildlife areas, and 14 natural resource areas. Oh, there’s also those 50 state parks that have free admission soon.
