Lake Mendota is in good health this year, according to the Clean Lakes Alliance. | Photo by 608today
How healthy are our lakes? The Clean Lakes Alliance has the answer. It recently released its official 2023 report and, all things considered, our lakes are faring well.
Metrics used
Phosphorus | This element fuels plant and algae growth, which can reduce recreational use, property values, and public health.
Cyanobacteria | Blooms can steal the oxygen and nutrients other organisms need to live.
Chlorides | Elevated levels can cause cells to lose water and become deprived of nutrients, killing a wide variety of organisms.
PFAS | PFAS are a collection of man-made “forever chemicals” that build up in the environment.
Overall results
Good news:
Drought conditions limited runoff, helping the lakes attain “good” to “excellent” rankings for phosphorus levels and water clarity.
In 2023, there are fewer cyanobacteria blooms than in years past.
Lume Acidified Body Wash, which is supposed to remove odor better than soap thanks to its key ingredient: mandelic acid. Choose from scents like clean tangerine or go unscented for sensitive skin types.
Of all Madison’s lakes, I have the deepest affinity for Lake Wingra. It was walking along its shores, in the dead of winter, that me and my wife decided to leave Atlanta, Georgia and live here. It’s one of the best decisions we’ll ever make.
