Whether you’re a Mad City native or a newcomer, there are just some things every Madisonian understands to be true.

  • Retiring Dane County Executive Joe Parisi’s last day in office will be Friday, May 3. He has led the county since 2011. “Together, we’ve accomplished a great deal and I look forward to remaining part of such a vibrant community,” Parisi said. Voters will choose Parisi’s successor later this year. (WKOW)
Edu
  • New Madison Metropolitan School District superintendent Dr. Joe Gothard will start next month. The National Superintendent of the Year, Gothard is currently finishing his work in Minnesota with plans to begin in Madison on Monday, May 20. (Channel 3000)
Development
  • A new multi-family apartment complex is coming to Sun Prairie. The city council approved the construction of two four-story buildings consisting of 163 units that will be located at 998 E. Main St. Construction is beginning soon. (Sun Prairie Star)
Family
  • Madison has a new resident: Betty, a new red panda at the Henry Vilas Zoo. The one-year-old female comes from the Lincoln Children’s Zoo. She was introduced to the zoo’s other red panda, Bandit, this week.
Sports
  • As the NCAA basketball tournament is wrapping up, another basketball season is about to commence in Madison. The Madison Mavericks, a semi-pro minor league team, opens its 2024 season at Madison College on Saturday, April 6 at 12 p.m.
Health
  • The solar eclipse is coming up on Monday, April 8. If weather allows, remember to view the event safely using eclipse glasses, which the Madison Public Library is offering for free. (Channel 3000)
Outdoors
  • What are your thoughts on the impact of wake sports on Wisconsin’s environment? The DNR wants to know. There will be a hearing at McFarland High School (5103 Farwell St.) on Monday, April 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. (WKOW)
Number
  • 1,000,000. That’s how many Chicago Cubs baseball cards Beau Thompson has. The Madison native will be honored for his collection this afternoon at Wrigley Field, where he’s scheduled to throw out the first pitch before his beloved Cubs host the Dodgers. (Wisconsin State Journal)

  • The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra welcomes French virtuoso violinist Gilles Apap to Beethoven’s “Violin Concerto in D” + Vaughan Williams’ “The Lark Ascending” to close out the 23/24 Masterworks Season on Friday, April 19. Opening the concert is Sinfonietta by E.J. Moeran whose music is charged with tremendous rhythmic energy. Snag tickets.*

The Great Wisconsin Birdathon is upon us. Since 2012, the state’s biggest bird conservation fundraiser has relied on bird lovers to form or contribute to teams that raise funds and awareness for the conservation of our feathered friends.


In 2023, $122,162 was raised. A few funding recipients included:

  • Audubon Great Lakes
  • BIPOC Birding Club of Wisconsin
  • International Crane Foundation
  • SELVA
  • SOS Save Our Songbirds

Gather your bird herd

Participation is free and accessible to nature lovers of all ages. Once you find a group to bird with, simply make an account and register your team. Fundraising and birding will take place Monday, April 15-Saturday, June 15.

Where to bird

Not sure where to start? The City of Madison Parks Division puts on weekly Bird and Nature Adventures. These free family-friendly events last about 90 minutes and participants get a guided walking tour of some of Madison’s parks.
