It’s maple syrup season in Wisconsin, a long-standing tradition with Native American roots. Usually running from mid-March to mid-April, this year’s unseasonably warm winter threw a wrench in the expected timeline, though syrup is still flowing.

Maple Sugar Time
Saturday, March 23 | 1-2:30 p.m. | Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, 1111 E. Brown Deer Rd., Milwaukee | $12-$18 | Learn how maple sap turns into syrup, how to identify a maple tree, and practice tapping a log with a hand drill.

Maple Sugar Days
Saturday, March 23-Sunday, March 24 | 12-4 p.m. | Wehr Nature Center, 9701 W. College Ave., Franklin | $10 | Register for this program which includes a short walk to the sugarbush, a visit to an old-time sugaring camp, a boil-down demonstration, and stories about the Native American origins of maple sugaring.

Maple Festival
Saturday, April 6 | 9 a.m.-2 p.m. | MacKenzie Environmental Center, W7303 County Highway CS, Poynette | Free | Drop-in activities, guided tours of the sugarbush, tapping demonstrations, and talks about the historical methods and cultural importance of maple sugaring in Wisconsin.

Equipment:
  • Drill and hammer
  • Collection container (think: large buckets or coffee containers)
  • Large boiling pan
  • Cheesecloth
  • Candy thermometer
  • Tapping spouts
Ideal conditions: When the temperature falls around or below freezing at night, and into the 40s during the day.

Ideal trees: Maple trees with a diameter larger than 10 inches.

Announced
  • Milwaukee’s Summerfest lineup is full. It includes such varied acts as Maroon 5, Buckcherry, Living Colour, Amy Grant, Kane Brown, Rico Nasty, Keith Urban, En Vogue, and Lil Yachty. Tickets are on sale now. The festival runs three consecutive weekends (June 20-22, June 27-29, and July 4-6).
Traffic
  • Reconstruction on Schmitt Place and Harvey Street begins Wednesday, March 25 through late-May. Just off of University Avenue, the roads will be closed to thru traffic as the city puts in new asphalt, curbs, gutters, driveway aprons, and sidewalks.
Outdoors
  • How do you want Dane County Parks to manage its outdoor resources? The county is requesting community input. Two public meetings will be held — one on Wednesday, April 3 at the Lussier Family Heritage Center, and one on Sunday, April 14 at the Village of Windsor Municipal Building.
Edu
  • The Madison Metropolitan School District is ending early release Mondays at high schools next year due to changes with Metro Transit busing. Elementary and middle school students will continue having early release Mondays. (Wisconsin State Journal)
Eat
  • Sushi Lover is now open. The owners of Zen Ramen opened the all-you-can-eat sushi and hibachi place at 72 West Towne Mall. It offers tableside service with a menu of over 100 items.
Feel Good
  • UW Health encourages patients to express gratitude toward doctors for National Doctors’ Day — Saturday, March 30. Patients can send private messages via the UW Health website today, or post on the public board until Tuesday, April 2.
Opening
  • Madison visitors will soon have a new lodging option downtown. The Moxy Madison Downtown hotel is opening next week at 823 E. Washington Ave. Amenities include fireplaces, an eighth-floor restaurant, and views of Lake Monona. Rates run from $140 to over $500 per night.
Finance

While I’m a big fan of the pizza from both Ian’s and Salvatore’s, their non-pizza menu items are just as good. Ian’s salads are my favorite in the city, and the bolognese from Salvatore’s is a go-to when I’m craving pasta.
