Mickie’s Dairy Bar has been a staple for hungover Madisonians since 1946. The original owners, Norm Bass and Van Reese, sold the business to Janet and Payow Thongnuam in 1991 under the agreement that the Thongnuams would maintain the menu, charm, and history of the iconic Monroe Street diner to the best of their ability.
While Mickie’s is best known for The Scrambler — a glorious pile of eggs, meat, hash browns, and other breakfasty toppings of your choosing — we’re opting to emulate the sweeter side of the menu.
Mickie’s French toast is not your average French toast, because it’s not really “toast” at all. Instead of bread, the dish is made with cinnamon rolls which are halved and battered before being grilled like traditional French toast.

Preheat oven according to instructions on the cinnamon roll packaging
Flatten 4 cinnamon rolls onto the bottom of a baking dish (we used a glass 9x9 pan)
Bake for the minimum time listed on the cinnamon roll packaging
Mix the remaining ingredients in a bowl until the batter is smooth, set aside
Remove rolls from oven and let cool on a cutting board, flatten further with a rolling pin or the bottom of a glass
Warm up a griddle or large skillet on medium heat
Dip each rolled-out roll into your batter, letting the excess drip off into the bowl, before placing on the hot skillet
Cook for 3-5 minutes on each side
Enjoy with icing or your favorite French toast toppings

What’s the latest on the Madison Public Market?
The market hopes to be open to the public by May 2025. | Photo by Madison Public Market
City officials and the Madison Public Market shared a progress report this week exemplifying how the project is coming closer to fruition.
Ground broke in October 2023 and it’s on track to be open to the public by May 2025. Currently, work is being done on the interior. “Sub-slab utilities have been installed and new construction work on the inside of the facility will begin in the next several weeks,” the progress report states. Exterior work is scheduled to begin come spring.
Daniels Construction was contracted to carry out the long-awaited development. Some of its other projects you may recognize include Bar Corallini, University Station, and the Duck Blind at Warner Park.
With a concerted focus on equity and inclusiveness, the market will have 30 permanent booth spaces along with multiple temporary vending options. Vending spaces encompass everything from outdoor food cart stalls to pop-ups and collaborations with local businesses.
A comfy fit to curl up in while it’s still sweatshirt and hoodie season. We love: this pink + lime crop by East of These and this Blue Ridge Parkway sweatshirt from Burlaep.

Pro tip: Reference UW-Madison’s academic calendar when coordinating your Mickie’s trips. While it’s likely always going to be pretty busy (especially on the weekends), you’ll have a shorter wait when the students are gone.
