While Madison is notorious for being a big drinking city, we know how to live it up without liquor as well.
To celebrate Dry January, we chatted with Michael McDonald and Caitlyn Nicholson about N/A elixirs. McDonald is the bar manager at State Line Distillery and has led the development and creation of the entire bar program, including Dry January offerings. Nicholson oversees the bars at Amara, Lucille, and Merchant.
Q: If someone wants to start making mocktails at home, what’s one staple ingredient and/or utensil you’d suggest they keep on hand?
MM - Fresh citrus. Mocktail or cocktail, if it calls for juice, get some fresh fruit and juice it. Citrus really only holds its fresh flavor for 12 to 18 hours, so keep it fresh and you’ll taste the difference.
CN - A fruit and vegetable juicer.
Q: If you were to make a mocktail that represented Madison, what would be some of its key ingredients and why?
CN - A non-alcoholic Old Fashioned. N/A spirit (malt spirit works best), demerara cranberry syrup, fresh orange, cherry, and a lemon-lime soda (you can buy this or make it at home!), followed by a non-alcoholic beer.
Q: For those of us who aren’t participating in Dry January, what’s your go-to hangover cure?
MM - Eating before the festivities, maybe even throughout the night. One to one drink to water ratio sure goes a long way. - McDonald
CN - Lemon, honey, and ginger shots, OR an ice-cold Coca-Cola.

Madison Audubon recently changed its name to Badgerland Bird Alliance. However, a company in Waukesha took umbrage, in that it has used the name Badgerland Birding for more than seven years. Another new name should be announced in the coming weeks. (Wisconsin State Journal)

The gauntlet has been thrown down, Madisonians. In Switzerland there’s a cheese tasting that requires a 1.2 mile walk in knee-deep snow in the middle of the night. We think us Wisconsinites can crush that. (Food and Wine)

Where to watch the Packers game in Madison this Sunday

This Sunday, Jan. 14 the Packers play the Cowboys in Dallas. Sometimes playoff football is better viewed with a crowd that you can celebrate or commiserate with.
Here are a few places around Madison where you can go (Pack go) to watch the 3:30 p.m. game:
Baldwin Street Grille, 1304 E. Washington Ave.
This dive bar’s meat raffles promise “big meats, tasty treats, and lotsa lotsa drinks.”
Downtown Great Dane, 123 E. Doty St.
Distract yourself with a round of pool if the game takes a turn for the worse.
Jordan’s Big 10 Pub, 1330 Regent St.
Every beer you buy will come with a raffle ticket for prizes that will be awarded during the fourth quarter.
Lazy Oaf Lounge, 1617 N. Stoughton Rd.
In addition to free Jell-O shots for touchdowns and the halftime meat raffle, Lazy Oaf is raffling off a signed Romeo Doubs jersey this Sunday.
Workout gear from Aesthetic Built’s collection, which features durable, cutting-edge fabric technologies without compromising aesthetic appeal. We love this scuba oversized hoodie.
