The UW-Madison athletic department has a storied history. They’ve been primarily competing in the Big Ten Conference for all sports since the 1896-97 season. They have 23 varsity teams, including football, basketball, men’s hockey, women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s cross country, among other teams.
Where they play: Camp Randall Stadium, Kohl Center, UW Field House, among other facilities.

Local children will have a greater opportunity to learn Spanish with the opening of a new Spanish immersion daycare and preschool. Casa de Corazón, located on Madison’s West Side, recently opened. It houses 11 classrooms, an indoor and outdoor playground, and a kitchen. (Wisconsin State Journal)
Cause
The Madison Civic Club, in operation for 111 years, is dissolving due to a decline in membership and a loss of volunteers for leadership roles. The group’s board of directors will distribute its remaining funds to local organizations so its mission can live on. (Cap Times)
Opening
Madisonians will have a new place to have made-from-scratch soups, sandwiches, salads, and more this Thursday, Dec. 14. Café Zupas, a Salt Lake City-based restaurant chain, will have a grand opening at its first Madison location near the East Towne Mall on E. Washington Ave. (InBusiness)
Civic
Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett recently swore in nine new deputies in the Dane County Courthouse. “We do so much more than just enforce the law,” Barrett said. “We are here to keep and maintain the peace.” The deputies’ first assignment will be in the Dane County Jail, where they will serve a two-year probationary period. In hoops of improving the lives of local youth, Ericka Brown has started a Higher Dimensions Youth Basketball program. Brown, who has spent her career focused on restorative justice, is bringing basketball opportunities to 4th to 8th grade children. (Madison365)

Madison is on track for some railroading adventure

All aboard. It’s been announced that five new rail routes in Wisconsin have been selected to receive $500,000 each in planning and developing rail expansion. This includes a corridor that would connect Milwaukee to Minneapolis through Madison.

Visitors can take a 10-mile trip on the last remaining piece of the original interurban network which operated in Wisconsin.

It is an outdoor, living museum and operating railroad recreating life during the Golden Age of railroading.
🚃 Whitewater Historical Society, 301 W. Whitewater St., Whitewater
The local history museum is located in the 1890-91 Whitewater Passenger Depot.
For something much closer, Olbrich Botanical Gardens currently has its Holiday Express Model Train and Flower Show. And, while shopping downtown, hop aboard the free holiday trolley.
