News Notes
Development
  • The Madison Plan Commission granted approvals for the future Wisconsin History Center on the square. The unanimous decision includes demolition permits for three North Carroll Street buildings. City Council’s final votes are forthcoming. (Madison.com)
Outdoors
  • Hunting season is upon us with multiple openings starting in September. The Wisconsin DNR urges hunters to double-check regulations and season dates online before heading out. Also on the DNR’s website is a list of public land with hunting blinds. (Channel 3000)
Plan Ahead
  • Stop by Monroe Street this Friday, Sept. 1 for First Friday — a monthly evening event celebrating the street’s retail stores and restaurants with discounts and specials. This week’s event will feature live music at Wingra Park from 6 to 8 p.m.
Award
  • This evening, 10 commendable youth workers will be honored and two will be presented with “Legends of Out-of-School Time” awards. The recognition ceremony will be at the Madison Arts Youth Center from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Honorees include workers from Centro Hispano, Goodman Community Center, and Rooted.
Weather
  • Look up. Tonight’s full moon is not only the second one this month (aka a blue moon); it’s also the last supermoon we’ll see until 2032, appearing 8% bigger and 16% brighter than usual. Check local charts for the best time to view. Bonus: shop for telescopes. (NPR)
Coming Soon
  • The Greenway Shopping Center will soon be home to a J.Crew store. While exact details have yet to be released, this will be the state’s second store, joining the city of Wauwatosa. (NBC 15)
Finance
  • Refinance rates are skyrocketing. But home equity rates remain relatively low — which means that now is a great time to borrow against your home. Calculate your payment.*

Nearly half of Madison’s households are renter-occupied. So, there’s a good chance that some of you are either tenants or landlords. Let’s check out what owner and tenant resources the city offers.

Tenants

Tenant Resource Center | 1202 Williamson St.

Keep in mind...
  • Most leases require owner’s permission to sublet.
  • Get any promises made by your landlord in writing.
  • Apply for rent abatement if code violations aren’t taken care of.

Owners

Best Practices Certification Program | Apply by email or phone (608-266-4555)
Section 8 | Submit current or future vacant listings to the Section 8 Office for free.

Keep in mind...
  • If you don’t provide check-in/check-out forms, you must return the entire security deposit.
  • Give at least a 24-hour notice before entering tenant’s unit — bonus points for giving an estimate on duration of the visit.
  • Late fees can’t be more than 5% of a month’s rent.
