Getting around town during UW-Madison’s Graduation weekend

UW-Madison’s Spring 2023 Commencement is this weekend. If you’ll be attending, congrats to you and yours. If you’re not attending, let’s check out how to best traverse (or escape) the isthmus on one of the busiest weekends of the year.

Friday, May 12

Don’t expect to be able to walk into a restaurant downtown without a reservation and be seated in a timely manner, or at all. With graduation weekend overlapping with Mother’s Day, downtown reservations this weekend have been booked to the brim for weeks.

We suggest heading to the ‘burbs instead. Here are a few ideas to kick off your brainstorming sesh:

News Notes
Seasonal
  • Tomorrow marks the first Madison Night Market of the 2023 season. State Street will host dozens of local vendors, and Boulder’s will have a mobile climbing wall on-site.
Sports
  • Wisconsin volleyball will play nine non-conference matches this fall, with four at home. The schedule includes a match against Marquette at Fiserv Forum. Also, an exhibition match against UIC will replace the usual intrasquad scrimmage thanks to an NCAA rule change. (NBC 15)
  • The PGA Tour announced that the American Family Insurance Championship will move to TPC Wisconsin in 2025, while this and next year’s tournaments will stay at University Ridge. University Ridge has hosted since 2016, but TPC courses are preferred by the PGA Tour. (WKOW)

  • Hook’s Cheese Company — a Farmers’ Market fave — cut up a 40-pound block of white cheddar aged for 20 years. The cheese is priced at $209 per pound with half of the proceeds going to area food pantries. While it’s nearly sold out, you can try your luck at requesting a cut. (Channel 3000)
Festival
  • Breese Stevens Field announced the return of the Seltzer and Cider Fest on Saturday, August 19. Grab your tickets starting Friday, May 12 to sample products from local and national seltzer, cider, and tea makers. (NBC 15)
Health
  • Community Medical Services held a ribbon cutting for its new Opioid Treatment Program Clinic in Madison. The facility, set to open this month, will offer extended hours and is the organization’s first clinic in Madison. (Madison.com)

It’s really a shame that there are only a handful of Madison Night Markets each year. I’m much more of a night owl than an early bird, and it’s far more socially acceptable to grab a pre-shopping pitcher when the sun is setting, rather than rising.
