While composting is most effective as a year-round endeavor, spring is as good a time as any to get started. Today, we’re breaking down — no pun intended — composting 101 in the 608.

What is composting?

Composting accelerates the natural breakdown of organic matter (food scraps included), producing a natural fertilizer that is nutrient-rich and beneficial for soil and plants.

    Assembly

First things first, you’ll need a bin:
The key to a good compost pile is to layer “brown” + “green” material.
    1. At the bottom of your bin, lay down a small layer of soil topped with 4 inches of coarse brush + sticks.
    2. Lay down 4 inches of green material.
    3. Lay down 8 inches of brown material — add a bit of water to keep things damp.
    4. Add another ~1-inch layer of soil.
    5. Repeat steps 2-4 until your bin is full.
    6. Turn the pile after ~1 month. Your compost will be ready in ~3 months.
Check out the city’s How-To video for more info.

Keep layering your green + brown materials until your bin is full and ready to be mixed.

Did anyone else used to be obsessed with Rachael Ray’s talk show? Writing today’s lead piece reminded me of her garbage bowl method. I love to cook, and now that those food scrap drop-off sites are opening up, I think I’ll be taking advantage of them. Making Mother Earth and Rachael Ray proud — two equally important women in my life.
