Calling all stargazers. We’ve put together a handy guide of this year’s celestial events so you won’t miss a thing. Grab your calendar, mark down these dates, and start planning your 2023 night sky viewing adventures.

đŸ’« Meteor showers

If you missed the Quadrantid meteor shower on January 3 and 4, fear not — there will be plenty more showers to catch this year. Here’s a rundown of what to expect:
  • Lyrids: April 22-23
  • Eta Aquarids: May 6-7
  • Delta Aquarids: July 28-29
  • Alpha Capricornids: July 30-31
  • Perseids: August 12-13
  • Draconids: October 7
  • Orionids: October 21-22
  • Southern Taurids: November 4-5
  • Northern Taurids: November 11-12
  • Leonids: November 17-18
  • Geminids: December 13- 14
  • Ursids: December 21-22

🌕 Full moons and supermoons

It may technically be the Year of the Water Rabbit, but it’s also the moon’s year to shine. While most years there are 12 full moons, 2023 will welcome 13 (two will occur in August). Here’s the full list, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

  • April 6: Pink moon
  • May 5: Flower moon
  • June 3: Strawberry moon
  • July 3: Buck moon
  • August 1: Sturgeon moon

  • Madison Metropolitan School District officials are considering a raise for summer school staff. Last year, the staff took a pay cut from $40 to $28 per hour; the pay increase would bump the staff’s pay back up to $40 per hour this year. (Cap Times)
  • Following the sudden dissolution of One City School’s ninth and tenth-grade classes, Madison Teachers Inc. is requesting the return of nearly $500,000. This money was originally allocated to One City by MMSD’s budget in order to teach the 51 students that are now not affiliated with the district. 💰 (Channel 3000)
Community
  • The construction of Little John’s new location in Fitchburg has been delayed, leaving the nonprofit in need of a production-style kitchen to work out of once its current lease end on Friday, Feb. 10. If you have any location leads or would like to support the nonprofit, contact them here. 🍳
Opening
  • The historic University Club will reopen its doors after three long years of being closed due to COVID-19. The Club — now under the management of the Wisconsin Union — will feature a new casual dining space along with a new look. Check it out on opening day, Monday, Jan. 23. (Channel 3000)

  • Did you know that Madison’s commercial buildings are responsible for 30% of the City’s carbon emissions? Legislators introduced a bill that will require buildings larger than 25,000 sqft to benchmark their annual energy use, and those larger than 50,000 sqft will require a building tune-up every four years.
Development
  • The Filene House was unanimously recommended as a landmark by the City’s Landmark Commission. Now, it’s up to City Council to finalize the designation before Vermilion Development submits its official land-use application. đŸ—ïž (Madison.com)

Blackhawk Ski Club | While this is a members-only club, the myriad of sporting options may be worth it for some families or individuals. Think: ski jumping, mountain biking, biathlon program, alpine ski/boarding.
