While the past year may have already felt like a repetitious blur — like we lived the same day over and over againtomorrow is officially Groundhog Day.

Did you know you live right next to The Groundhog Capital of the World?

The Badgerland tradition of celebrating Groundhog Day dates back to 1948 — as Wisconsin celebrated its state centennial. For 50+ years Sun Prairie has been proclaimed as the premier destination for celebrating the holiday. The history of this capital + its celebrations is rich with city rivalries, a supposed space mission, and only one instance of biting.

With our history covered, let’s talk about the celebration this year.

The 74th Annual Sun Prairie Groundhog Day Prognostication ceremony will take place in downtown Sun Prairie’s Cannery Square. The ceremony will commence at 6:50 a.m. with the Prognostication taking place at sunrise — around 7:11 a.m. — when local meteorologist Jimmy the Groundhog will make his prediction.

Following the ceremony, be sure to hang around downtown, as many businesses + organizations will be offering specials for the holiday. Be on the lookout for deals at:
